Broomfield’s Oral Surgery Experts
Oral surgery refers to any surgical procedure performed on the tissues of your mouth and jaw, including your teeth and gums. There are numerous procedures that may require oral surgery. These include a simple tooth extraction or surgical/complex extractions, such as: impacted wisdom teeth, bone grafting and membrane placement, sinus lifts and dental implants. At Clear Dental Studio, we offer all of these procedures for the convenience and superior care of our patients.
Simple Extraction vs. Surgical or Complex Extraction
What Is the Difference Between a Simple Extraction and Surgical or Complex Extraction?
A simple tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth above the gum line in an area where your dentist can readily remove the tooth with forceps. A surgical or more complex extraction involves the removal of gum tissue, and in some cases, bone as well. Examples of surgical or complex extractions involve broken or fractured teeth and impacted wisdom teeth.
What Does the Tooth Extraction Entail? Does It Hurt?
Your dentist will administer local anesthesia to properly numb the area that they will be working on. Depending on the procedure you may consider nitrous or sedation for added comfort. Once the area is numb, your dentist will use instruments to gently work along the tooth. You will mostly feel pressure during the procedure and may hear some snapping or breaking noises along the way. This is all very normal. If a more complex extraction is being performed, removal of gum tissues and bone may be necessary. During the procedure you should not feel any pain. If you do start to feel anything, let your dentist know so they can re-administer more anesthetic. Every individual is different and some may need more anesthetic than others.
What Should I Expect After a Tooth Extraction?
Everyone perceives pain differently; do expect some discomfort, possible swelling and bleeding from time to time. Your dentist will prescribe you medications to help alleviate and reduce symptoms. After 3-4 days you should start to feel normal. It is recommended that you avoid smoking, using straws and spitting excessively with force. This is crucial so that the blood clot starts to form and does not dissolve, otherwise you may risk a dry socket. A dry socket can cause intense pain in the area of the extraction site. If you have pain that does not resolve after several days or there is an increasing amount of pain, please contact your dentist.
